Embracing Abilities. Expanding Possibilities.
Patrick, 27, has worked at HB Threads, Easterseals’ social enterprise, for nearly nine years. Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, Patrick has grown tremendously in his role—learning to make custom buttons and apparel, fold shirts, and work independently. What began as a trial job during his time at Easterseals Academy became a passion and long-term career.
I like working at HB Threads because I have a consistent routine, and it makes me feel good about myself that I can make buttons and help out,” Patrick says. “The job coaches are great because they help me focus when I get stuck.”
At HB Threads, Patrick creates unique merchandise often featuring positive messages like “Don’t Dis My Ability” or “Be Different.” His favorite products to make are buttons with his favorite comic book and Marvel characters.
Recently, Patrick began learning how to use HB Threads’ new embroidery machine, expanding his skills into custom embroidered apparel—a growing part of the business.
As HB Threads expands into embroidery, more opportunities are being created for individuals with disabilities like Patrick,” says Cody Wass, Director of Social Enterprise & Employment Opportunities at HB Threads. “Many of our employees have been with us 5–15 years. This is a career path, and one they’re proud of.”
Patrick’s journey started at HB Threads, part of Easterseals Academy’s job training program for students with autism, developmental delays, and other disabilities. He enjoyed it so much, he never left.
Today, Patrick works independently at the HB Threads office every week and is known for his attention to detail and positive attitude. He also holds a second job at a local comic book store and volunteers at the library—balancing work, hobbies, and community involvement with pride.
Patrick is an incredible young man with a great passion for his job and his coworkers,” Wass adds. “We’re lucky to have him as a production associate.”
HB Threads is proud to offer competitive-wage employment to individuals with disabilities—a rare opportunity in today’s job market. Patrick uses his earnings to grow his collection of superhero DVDs, save for books and games, and enjoy outings with friends.
Patrick’s flexibility, willingness to try new things, and openness to feedback were key in his transition from student to employee,” says Reis, a team leader at Easterseals. “He values his job and sees it as a core part of his life.”
Patrick lives in an assisted independent living facility and continues to thrive—thanks in part to the routine, purpose, and support HB Threads provides.
Every order placed at HB Threads directly supports inclusive employment for individuals of all abilities. Whether you’re ordering custom t-shirts, vests, magnets, buttons, or embroidered apparel, your purchase helps people like Patrick build confidence, skills, and independence.
